Book Review and Rating
This story and its characters absolutely stole my attention, and I loved reading this book. In Wild Dark Shore we meet Dominic and his three children, who are living on a tiny island near Antarctica that houses a world seed bank. It’s fictional but based on a real island and seed bank. The seawater is rising and it’s accepted that researchers and the seeds must relocate, and this family is waiting for their evacuation in the coming weeks. In that time, a woman washes ashore and kicks off a series of events that leave the reader trying to piece together who they can trust and what happened on the island before her arrival.
There is so much I love about this book, with the three kids at the top of this list. I felt immediately endeared to them (especially precocious Orly) and could feel the immense love and complex family dynamics with them and their father. If you enjoy family plotlines and flawed characters who are trying their best, but sometimes messing it all up, then this is a great one to pick up.
I really enjoyed the pacing of the book. It drew me in and sort of lulled me into a non-suspenseful journey and then bam, hit me with the last parts and had me absolutely tense. The author did such a great job with the layout of the whole plot. The only thing I had a hard time with was the romance sub-plot. It felt weird and not quite right, but also didn’t detract from the reading experience.
Highly recommend this to anyone who likes an atmospheric, slow-burn mystery with deeper character development. It’s a must if you enjoy science or remote nature because the descriptive scenes and botanical information were woven all throughout. This was my first from the author and won’t be my last.
My rating: 5.0 / 5.0
