This was a great book, and I was thinking about Zorah Sharaf for a few days after I turned the last page. The publisher described it as a “literary game of ping pong” and that is exactly what it felt like. Every time I thought I had solved the puzzle I would be confronted with a new perspective or piece of information that made me question my prior conclusions and biases.
The author did a truly incredible job of building a slow mystery while also holding the reader captive. There are many layers to the societal critiques in this book, and I am sure I would find more if I re-read it. I would not be surprised if this becomes a favorite book of 2026 and continues to generate buzz for awhile. Patmeena Sabit really knocked it out of the park with her debut.
My recommendation: go in knowing nothing and buddy read with a friend or book club so you can discuss afterwards!
